What To Do Right Now

Pull out your child's current IEP and find the accommodations section. Compare what's listed against the ADHD-specific accommodations above.

For each accommodation listed, ask yourself: Is this actually happening in the classroom? Have I seen evidence of it?

Look at the evaluation data. Do the accommodations directly address the deficits identified in the testing? If not, they may be generic filler.

Ask your child (if appropriate): 'Does your teacher give you extra time? Do you get to use your [accommodation]?' Their answer tells you more than any progress report.

Are the ADHD Accommodations Specific Enough?

An accommodation can appear in the IEP and still be too vague to use consistently. Upload your child's IEP to identify written supports that may be missing, unclear, or disconnected from the needs described in the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my child with ADHD have an IEP or a 504 for accommodations?
If your child only needs accommodations such as environmental changes or extended time, a 504 may be sufficient. If they need specialized instruction in executive functioning, organization, or self-regulation, request an IDEA evaluation to determine whether an IEP is appropriate.
Can movement breaks be taken away as punishment?
No. If movement breaks are written into the IEP as an accommodation, they are a legal right — not a privilege. They cannot be withheld as punishment. If this is happening, document it and raise it at the next IEP meeting or file a complaint.
What if my child's teacher says ADHD accommodations are 'disruptive' to the class?
The school is legally required to provide the accommodations in the IEP regardless of the teacher's opinion. If a specific accommodation genuinely creates a classroom issue, the team should meet to find an alternative that serves the same purpose — not simply remove it.
How many accommodations should be in an ADHD IEP?
There's no magic number. The IEP should include every accommodation your child needs to access their education. Don't let the school limit accommodations to a certain number. If your child needs 15 accommodations, they should have 15. Quality and specificity matter more than quantity.
